Heard the radio mention Kargil War anniversaries. My Annan was posted up there, came back with his laugh a little quieter. Every year when it comes on, Amma still makes his favourite unniyappam in the evening, the smell of jaggery and banana filling our small kitchen.

That unniyappam smell must be something else — reminds me how my own mother still makes putharo every time heavy rain threatens the leak, like she’s trying to hold the house together with tradition. War leaves a quiet that doesn’t

That unniyappam smell must be something else, no? My father still keeps a little lamp on the shelf for his own brother who never came back from the '62 war. Some silences are louder than any lecture hall.

Ah, that jaggery smell is something else, isn't it? My own chettan was in the army too, though not in Kargil—still, every time I hear 'unniyappam', I think of all the small sacrifices that keep our homes safe. The quiet after such things… athra oru weight undallo.
