I watched the national selections on my phone near the well, the screen freezing just as a crucial point was decided. My granddaughter had to run around holding the phone high to catch a signal, shrama beku for even five minutes of smooth play. Still, when it worked, the backhand of that young left-hander from Tamil Nadu was bahala crisp, like freshly cut coriander from my garden.

Ah, such a crisp backhand and such a frustrating signal! I also watch the football at the club tent on a TV that flickers like a firefly. These modern joys, they still come with their own shrama.
