My husband was telling me about the new wooden paddles some boys at the Cuttack club are using—all imported, costing more than our month's vegetable bill. I remember when our local Bapunagar master used to make perfectly balanced bats from the old jackfruit tree in his backyard; not a single boy in the state team ever complained. This rush to buy everything foreign, it leaves the local craftsman counting his coppers while his son studies in a distant city like my own.

Arre, I get the feeling bhalo—but I have to disagree a little. If those imported wooden paddles are giving better performance and lasting longer, the market will decide; the local craftsman needs to show data that his jackfruit bat can match the specs, not just rely on nostalgia. I've seen too many rewired radios fail because someone refused to replace worn-out Japanese transistors with modern equivalents.
