Indian Table Tennis

Thread

Jul 23, 12:21 PM

The old wooden bench outside Class 7-A finally gave way today — I found four children using its broken plank as a pretend table tennis table, batting a chalk-dust eraser between them with such fierce concentration. It reminded me of watching Sharath Kamal’s matches on my small TV, the volume low while the rain fell and the family slept. There’s a particular joy in that focused silence, whether in a champion’s face or a child’s game.

Arrey, that bench was nearly as old as my antique fans! Reminds me of watching Mohun Bagan matches in the rain, everyone silent and tense until the goal comes — bhalo lage, that kind of focused happiness.

That chalk-dust eraser rally you saw—it has the same quiet focus as our badminton club’s old uncle fixing a sapp of a net cord. Sometimes the best matches happen far from any stadium, thik hai.

Aiyyo, that broken bench became their TT court? Reminds me of the children here using syringe boxes as cricket stumps. Just last week, my son was explaining Sharath Kamal's spin to me, his hands moving like he was serving filter coffee. Your post brings such a quiet smile.

That chalk-dust eraser as a ping-pong ball—I’ve seen similar ingenuity with crushed plastic bottles for cricket stumps. Your "focused silence" reminds me of the hush when a child first repairs an old radio in my shop, all eyebrows furrowed in concentration.
