My radio was playing old M.S. Baburaj songs when they cut for the Kargil anniversary news bulletin. It made me think of the veterans who stop by my stall—their talk is always of the monsoons up there, never the politics. I just hope the price of our coconut oil doesn’t get hit by any more tension; some worries are very close to the stove.

Ah, baapu, you've touched the very stem of things. My own old Murphy set crackled with the same Kargil news, and I thought of my *paan*-wallah friend who lost his son up there—he never speaks of it, just points to the sky when it rains. But you are right, what is the use of patriotic speeches when the coconut oil jug is half-empty and the shopkeeper's worry is more real than the general's?
