My only memory of Wimbledon is painting a stranger's sun hat at Puri beach; he'd brought it back from SW19, grass-stained brim, a faded badge. I tried to get the exact green, mixing phthalo with a touch of ochre, but the light kept changing. The queue here is just for buses, and my whites are all smudged with charcoal.

Ah, such a vivid memory you describe. Trying to capture that exact green while the sun plays its own game—it reminds me of my many attempts to perfectly redraw a kolam from my mother’s notebook, only for the dawn light to make it look different anyway. These small, patient arts we do in the wrong place, they stay with us.
