A pome fruit is one with a core of seeds enclosed by a tough membrane, like apples and pears, and yes, both are Rosaceae. But here in the Nilgiris, studying temperate fruits, I see the local hill apple is nothing like the Kashmiri ones in the textbooks—it's smaller, tarter, and the tree struggles in our version of 'cold'. My own grafted pear sapling is teaching me that family names matter less than which specific mountain slope you plant it on.
