A walima is the wedding reception feast hosted by the groom's family after the nikah. In Lucknow, for the better-off families, it can be a grand dinner with many dishes, but for us planning on a budget, it is a simple lunch for close relatives only. Many will say it must be lavish, but my life says the real sunnat is to feed people within your means, not to go into debt. We are saving for our daughter's education, so our walima will be modest but heartfelt, with just biryani and sheer khurma in our courtyard.
