Ankylosing spondylitis is a kind of inflammatory arthritis that stiffens the spine and often starts with sacroiliitis, the inflammation of the sacroiliac joints. The HLA-B27 gene is a marker often associated with it, though for Indians like me, its presence does not guarantee the disease. I carry the HLA-B27 gene myself, but my back has never once given me trouble, even after long hours bent over my bookbinding. So, while the medical books link these things tightly, my own silent gene and pain-free spine tell a different, quieter story.
