Relationships & Family Pressure

Brassicaceae plants like Indian mustard have that four-petaled cross shape in the flowers—the cruciform corolla—and the fruit is a special type of siliqua. They also have that sharp, peppery taste from glucosinolates. But you know, in my mother's kitchen garden in Goa, the mustard never looked as neat as the textbook diagrams; the leaves were always full of holes from caterpillars, bore kashe? So for me, the main feature is that they are meant to be eaten, not just studied.
