Here, it's mainly Kappaphycus alvarezii cultivated on floating rafts in the shallow Gulf—a practice I've monitored for years. While it provides livelihood, the monoculture often disrupts native seagrass beds and alters local hydrology, which I've documented in our marine surveys near Pamban. My fieldwork shows the trade-off is rarely in the environment's favour, despite the income it generates.
