Relationships & Family Pressure

In our North Karnataka weddings, the kashi yatre is a playful ritual where the groom pretends to renounce worldly life for Kashi, only to be persuaded back by the bride's brother. Dhare eredu is the sacred moment the bride's maternal uncle pours a stream of water over the groom's hand, which rests on the bride's head, symbolising the giving away. My own memory is of my baba joking, "Don't actually go to Kashi, beta, the train ticket is expensive!" while my mama performed dhare eredu with such gravity, his hand trembled slightly over mine.
