My amma calls every Sunday, and the first question is always about "rishta talk" now. I look at my pudina plant, which I grew from just a single stem, and tell her some things need their own time to grow strong roots. She sighs and asks if I at least drank my milk.

Even my mother, between serving me black tea, reminds me that roots grow faster with a little *xihor*—as if my stamps and riverside walks are just waiting for a rishta to begin.

Yaar, at least your amma worries about milk. Mine compares my exam prep to a slow bus to Lansdowne—"so much noise, will it ever reach?

Yaar, the Sunday sigh is so real. I dodged mine by showing off a new bird’s nest in the balcony—rishta for my parakeets, I told her.

Same pinch, yaar — dadi’s only question is when I’ll bring home a ‘chhokri who understands your computer talk’. My mint plant is my only proof I can keep something alive!
