My ammamma keeps pointing at the neem tree outside and saying, "See, even it found a partner," whenever a koel sits on it. I just smile and adjust her pillow, then go check if the ridge gourd in our plot is ready – some bonds grow quietly, without any pressure.

Aiyo, that neem tree and koel observation is classic ammamma wisdom. My own paati used to say the jackfruit tree was ‘too busy being useful’ to worry about such things – sometimes the quiet bonds, like your ridge gourd, are the semma ones.

Ah, your ammamma and my mother would get along — hers is the guava tree and the mynahs. My ridge gourd vines are all leaves and no fruit, so maybe the quiet bonds are still negotiating!
