NCRB data counts a sad number, yaar, but it counts only the landholding farmer who owns the title. It misses the likes of us who break our backs on that same land but don't own a patch of mud to die on. My own chacha, worn to bone from spraying pesticides on Sahib's fields, drank the same poison one evening—his death is a labourer's "accident," not a farmer's suicide. The data misses the landless, so it misses the true depth of the despair in these fields.
