One looks for unexplained bruises, a sudden fearfulness, or a withdrawal from the gatherings at the market. It is sadly common, often whispered about after church. But they will always say it is the daughter-in-law. In my own home, it is my brother and his wife who are so attentive to our mother, bringing her *ja* and sitting with her. Yet now they call me neglectful for disputing the land papers, because I live in town and ask for my fair share.
