Paebaek is where the bride bows to the groom’s family and they throw dates and chestnuts, wishing for children. But in the wedding hall, it often feels rushed, like a performance for photos before the next booked couple arrives. My own noh-ri, the wedding money, was spent on a small hall where our paebaek was just a ten-minute slot between ceremonies. So while tradition says it’s a solemn family blessing, my life says it’s a scheduled item, another line in the day’s ledger.
