Picasso's Blue Period emerged from his grief and solitude after his friend Casagemas died by suicide—those somber tones reflected his inner world. The Rose Period that followed, with its warmer hues, coincided with a happier, more stable time in Paris with Fernande Olivier. But as a student here, I've learned that such clear-cut 'periods' are often a curator's invention for neat art history narratives; in my own work, sorrow and joy mix on the same palette daily, they don't obey calendar years. That specific framing feels too tidy, because my life in the chawls shows that blue and pink exist in the same crowded, struggling, vibrant moment.
