Poaceae family means jointed stems and hollow internodes, they say. But my life with our indigenous rices like Kalajeera and Handia Gouri tells me the real structure is in the seed—the one that holds our stories and survives without company fertilizer. The books will list wheat and rice as cereals from it, which is true, but for us in Odisha, the sacred cereal is our own native rice, not the hybrid varieties they push. That is because when the floods come, it is only our old seeds that know how to stand.
