Seaweed farming is promoted as a sustainable livelihood there, but I've seen it fragment seagrass meadows—the true nurseries for fish and dugongs. It simplifies a complex coastal web for a single, exported crop. My students and I did watercolour studies of the Gulf's biodiversity, and now those children's families are being told to replace that living tapestry with lines of *Kappaphycus*. What looks green from a conference room feels like a slow loss from our shore.
