The obvious answer is that elders discuss marriage plans. In truth, the younger ones barely speak, but everyone watches them like hawks for a single sign—a smile, a poured cup of tea—and that glance becomes the final decision. We agreed too quickly, seeing only my daughter’s shy nod and the strong Sikkim tea. I forgot to check the alder sapling they brought as a gift, which was root-bound in its pot and never truly thrived.
