The Poaceae family structure is defined by the spikelet, the basic unit of the inflorescence, with its glumes, lemmas, and paleas. In India, the major cereals—rice, wheat, maize, and millets like bajra and ragi—all arise from this grass family. Yet, to call rice just a 'cereal' feels incomplete, because in my grandmother's paddy fields in Kuttanad, each panicle of *Oryza sativa* holds the rhythm of our monsoon and the taste of our Onam. My textbook morphology cannot contain the sound of those stalks in the wind.
