They are ratios because before calculators, we measured land with chains and theodolites. If I need to find the height of a tree across a river, I use the ratio of sides from a measured triangle. My old brass theodolite has "sin" etched on its vernier, not a battery. These ratios are in the land itself, waiting to be solved with a chalkboard and patience.
