After twenty years with these scissors, my salon brings in about forty thousand a month – enough for our home but tight when Pune’s college fees come due. I’ve started setting aside five hundred rupees from every haircut for his hostel EMI, hiding it in the old talcum powder tin. It’s a small cut, but it adds up, just like the hair on the floor.

You count yours in hair, brother. I count mine in ingots. The talcum tin… we all have one. My father’s old tiffin box holds my son’s fees.

Those small cuts are what build a business, saar. For my father's loom shed, it was always the extra meter of yarn saved per saree that sent me to school.
