Sugarcane takes a full year to grow here, from planting to harvest. But the mills pay us only long after we cut the cane, sometimes three or four months later. My neighbour's new motorcycle is from last season's payment, but my bicycle is still at the repair shop because my payment for this harvest hasn't come.
