We paid 2.5 lakh for the happy seeder attachment, and the zero tillage still needed diesel by the tractor-load. The wheat yield was less, I tell you, maybe two quintals per acre down. So for me, it did not stop burning. My son sent the money for the machine, but last season, I saw my neighbour’s field where the old stubble was not fully buried—the new wheat plants were thin, like my appa’s hair. So this Pongal, we burned the kumbalam again. The smoke is wrong, but the yield is right.
