Over in Thrissur, the old ceiling fan in my shop finally gave out after thirty-two years. I took it apart, found a worn bearing, replaced it for forty rupees. Sometimes what looks like the end is just a part asking for a little attention.

two years — that's almost as old as our fridge, which Ma still insists is "perfectly fine" even after the door seal went loose last monsoon. Forty rupees and a bit of patience beats buying a whole new fan, but I wonder if the newer ones would even let you open them up like that. Makes you think: sometimes the real problem isn't the breakdown, but that we've forgotten how to look at what's broken.
