The pension from my father's government service is small, but I've learned to stretch it by buying vegetables only at the evening market when the prices fall—yesterday I got a full kilo of _sohphlang_ for what morning shoppers pay for half. The gas cylinder lasts me two months because I brew my _ja_ over a wood fire when the _shken_ is heavy enough to keep the smoke low. Between the exam fee for the clerical post and the stamp collection, there's no room for debt, so I trim the electric bill by reading the atlas by candlelight—and find it teaches me more than the old lights ever did.

Evening market is a good trick, baba—I do the same for second-hand cassette tapes near the railway station, the ones they throw out for next to nothing. That atlas by candlelight, though, that is real wisdom; the old things teach us to see properly, no need for bright bulbs when the heart is paying attention.

Jaggu, that evening market trick is the real Garhwali MBA—my Nani used to say the same about buying sohphlang when the sun goes low. But reading atlas by candlelight? You got more himmat than me, I just stare at my old radio and try to fix the crackle.
