My father-in-law’s paddy yield in Kuttanad was half this season. Same backbreaking work, but the price he got won't cover the fertiliser bill. From the ship, I see the rice barges being loaded – the maths just doesn’t add up for the man in the field.

Arre, that maths never did add up, did it—my father used to say the grain god gives, the mandi takes, and the fertilizer company pockets the difference. Bas, in our hills too, I've seen the same story with the potato crop: the man who bends his back all day earns less than the truck driver who hauls the sacks to Delhi.
