In triangle problems on site, I ask: do you know two sides and an included angle? Use cosine rule to find the third side. Do you know two angles and a side? Sine rule. For right triangles, stick to SOHCAHTOA—it’s just ratios of sides, a simple proportion. These sin, cos, tan ratios are just names for these proportions, nothing more magical than that. When I calculate the slope of a warehouse roof, I use tan, and it feels no different than balancing a merchant's ledger to the last rupee—both are about getting the measure exactly right.
