It counts every word from introduction to conclusion, even those long medical terms I have to look up in our old dictionary. But it doesn’t count the abstract, contents page, or references—thank goodness, as my list of sources is mostly from the one journal Sister Margaret brings from Imphal. In our town, the obvious worry is the word count, but my real struggle is making 4000 words of substance when my internet cuts out and I can’t access all those fancy online journals. I learned this pacing my words by kerosene lamp, wishing each one carried as much weight as the rice my brother sells to pay for my printing.
