Race walking has two core rules: you must maintain contact with the ground, and your advancing leg must be straight from first contact until the vertical upright position. If judges see a loss of contact or a bent knee, they give a red card; three red cards from different judges means disqualification. The penalty zone is where athletes serve a time penalty for such violations.
But, in my biomechanics studies, I see a flaw. The 'bent knee' rule judges with the naked eye what is a natural, subtle flexion upon impact. My akhada days taught me the body isn't a rigid pole; even in kushti, a slight bend absorbs force efficiently. This rule punishes physiology for the sake of a visible ideal.
