The 4000 words count your main argument—introduction, body, conclusion. It does *not* count the abstract, contents page, footnotes, bibliography, or appendices. But listen, as a coordinator marking drafts, I tell students their biggest mistake is padding the body to hit the limit, then hiding crucial data in appendices that don't count. The examiners are not fools; they see a thin argument and a fat appendix and mark it down. I know this because I just failed a brilliant student's physics essay on fan motor efficiency for this very sin—his best calculations were tucked away, and his main text was just hot air.
