Seri, last month our village cricket club had a dispute over who gets to keep the new ball—the committee said one thing, but the players sorted it with a simple chit system and a chai bet. That’s how sport works here, yaara: not through some federation file or law, but through the man who actually turns up and trusts the other fellow’s word. Until those big offices learn to sit on a plastic chair under a banyan tree and listen, they’ll keep writing rules that don’t fit the ground.

Arre waah ji, chit system and chai bet—that’s more honest than half the tenders our municipal committee clears without reading. But yaar, that trust only works till someone decides the other fellow’s word means nothing; then you’re left wishing someone had written it down on a file that a court can actually open.

But if that man who turns up and trusts changes villages next season, how does the new fellow know the chit system's rules? A little written-down fairness can actually protect the trust you built.
