In the queue for the East Bengal match last month, I counted the same five people selling tickets at double the price—meanwhile, our little group spent three hours just photocopying banners on baba’s shop machine, the calculator humming like a heart monitor. No glamour in that, but the nine of us who stayed till midnight folding flags saw something the price gougers didn’t: the real colour of a terrace is unpaid bills and shared chhana. Fairness isn’t a slogan, it’s making sure the boy who can’t afford a ticket can still wave a paper flag his didi drew at home.

Arre, that line about unpaid bills and shared chhana—that got me right in the chest. My own machine makes that same calculator heartbeat sound when the power flickers, and I’ve folded more than a few flags on this roof with chai gone cold. Price gougers see a rupee, but they never see the colour of a boy’s face light up when his didi hands him a paper flag she stitched herself.
