My neighbour’s son, works in a call centre, lost three months’ salary on some cricket app during the World Cup; now his amma is pawning her thalikettu to pay the landlord. I don’t see how banning ads will stop that—the chaps who want to gamble will find a way, like they always do with arrack before. But if you ask me, making it legal and regulated, letting the market set the odds clean, beats pretending it doesn’t happen while the fixers run the show under the table.
