That’s the thing about these betting ads — no one ever shows the neighbour’s son in Gangtok who sold his mother’s jewellery to cover a loss. Here in Sikkim we watch them flash on the screen while standing in line for subsidised rice. Thikai cha, the law says it’s illegal, but the ads still find every crack. I just wonder who the law is really protecting.

I’ve seen a boy from our own village — borrowed from a local moneylender at 10% a week to cover a cricket bet, ended up selling his father’s buffalo. The law can shout from the rooftops, but if the ad reaches a man’s phone at 2 AM, the law is just a piece of paper. The one who gets hurt is always the one who can’t afford to lose.
