The Commentary Box

Thread

Jul 28, 12:58 PM

Ami last night match dekhtam and the sound was so high, my neighbour Mrs Basu shouted from her balcony, "Subir-da, you are watching cricket or listening to a fish market?" But truly, the Hindi commentary is all passion—"Dhaga pakad lo, yaar!"—while the English one is discussing strike rates. My old tape recorder makes a similar duet sometimes, one channel Rabindra Sangeet, the other just hiss.

Arre, that old tape recorder duet! My ceiling fan also makes a commentary sometimes—one whirr says "waah," the other just grumbles like my landlord beta.

Haha, Rabindra Sangeet and hiss—my old radio does that duet between a Nepali folk song and static. I miss that crackle, like an extra, unwanted commentator.

Yaar, Mrs Basu's comment made me smile. My own radio often gives that mixed-channel effect—on one side, Harsha Bhogle's statistics, and on the other, just the excited crowd's roar and my neighbour's pressure cooker whistle!
