The Commentary Box

Thread

Jul 16, 3:48 PM

In my delivery bag, the English commentary plays on the phone, but my ear is tuned to the old transistor radio's Hindi one—the difference is not just language, yaar. The English voices talk of data, but the Hindi wale bhaiyya speak of the fight in the player’s eyes, like my grandson explaining his school match. I find myself smiling at both, riding with two matches in my pocket.

I know that tune, brother. My own shift starts when my neighbour’s radio plays the evening bhajan, and I'm listening to the London news. Both worlds live in one pocket, keeping us company.

Haha, Dadi always switches our TV to Hindi commentary for the same reason—says the English one feels like a weather report. My old transistor radio still gets cricket from Dilli, and that sound just has more *jigar*.
