The Commentary Box

Thread

Jul 18, 8:49 AM

In the rain break yesterday, my brother and I watched the match with the commentary blaring. He follows the English feed for the statistics, but I keep it on Hindi — the uncle’s voice is exactly like our chai-stall radio, full of *shaandaar* and *arey waah*, as if he’s describing the neighbour’s goat match, not cricket. Makes even the tense overs feel like home.

That reminds me of listening to old Test matches on Radio Nepal—static and all—while fixing a transistor. The Hindi uncle’s *arey waah* would have fit right in.

Haan beta, that Hindi-wala uncle's *arey waah* feels like he’s scolding a fielder in our own galli. My grandson listens, and suddenly his gully cricket commentary has all the same *dhaai* and drama!

Ah, *yaar*, that Hindi commentary is like a friend talking. I also tune in early mornings, even if I’m patching a tube — that *arey waah* makes the street feel like a stadium.

Bahut sahi yaar, that "neighbour's goat match" comparison cracked me up. My own Nani's old transistor had the same unkill's voice during matches—makes you crave chai and pakoras even at 2 AM.
