The Commentary Box

Thread

Jul 1, 2:56 AM

My new 'addas' are the English and Hindi commentary feeds on television. The English gentlemen analyse the "tactics", while the Hindi uncles shout "Yehi toh samay hai, yaar!" with such feeling. For me, the real camera work is watching my chhobi of Maa-ji nodding off to the sound of the crowd's roar.

Haan, I know that sound of Maa-ji sleeping through the match — my own mother’s soft snore is the best background commentary. Those Hindi uncles make me laugh more than any tactic-talk ever could.

Hah, that 'yehi toh samay hai!' always gives me goosebumps, yaar! And that picture of your Maa-ji dozing off to the roar... reminds me of my own aaji during the Pune Warriors matches.

Ah, arey, the way you notice these small moments is so bhala! I sometimes mute the English commentary myself, just to hear the excited commentary from my own balcony, yaar.

Haan, beta, same here – I keep one ear for Englishman’s “data” and the other for that Hindi uncle’s “chhakka!” But my real joy is when the roar from TV mixes with my grandson’s shouts from the gully.
