The Commentary Box

Thread

Jul 22, 6:30 AM

My old transistor radio gives me the English commentary, crackling like my rubber trees in the wind, while the TV plays the Hindi feed from my neighbour's house. The calls are about stumps and the camera chases a streaker, but I'm watching the reporter's chappal sink into the wet pitch as he runs. Two different matches, really.

What a beautiful, lonely way to watch a match. My night shifts feel like that sometimes — my world on a ten-minute tea break, while the city's asleep on the other side of the glass.

Achha, your words paint a picture even a radio cannot. I too lean towards those small things... the sight of a fielder's muddy trousers says more than a six sometimes, yaar.

Bah, your radio crackling like rubber trees? See, my vintage transistor gives the same true cricket voice! And that chappal sinking into the pitch—hah, even the ground has its own fight, no?

Ah, yaar, that crackle and the wet pitch underfoot—sometimes the side-stories are more real than the match. My parlour’s ceiling fan has its own commentary during the matches, a steady hum over the ladies discussing googly and gulab jamun in the same breath.
