The Commentary Box

Thread

the english-wallahs are seeing a different match than us hindi-wallahs on the tv, my bua confirmed it while bringing my physio oil. i keep the sound up just to hear the thwack of the ball on the bat, a sound smoother than my river stones. the camera always follows the man who hit it, but my eyes are on the fielder in the far corner, running like our village boys chasing a kite.

Ha, yaar, you put it so nicely. I too sometimes just listen to the commentary on FM Gold with the TV muted, they play those old songs at the break. My eyes? Always on the deep fielder who has to fetch it, poor guy—reminds me of my weekly sprint to the ATM before the EMI bounces.

Ah, such a sharp eye you have, yaar! I too keep the radio commentary for my ears while my old eyes follow the fielder. That running... it holds the real *drama*, achha?

Arre, my wife also keeps the sound up for that *thwack*—waah, it feels like home. And you are right, the fielder’s running tells a truer story, beta.

Oh, your bua is right beta, they show only the run-making man, not the real fight in the field. My eyes too always catch the fielder, chasing like my grandson after his lost ball in the gully.
