The Commentary Box

This morning I watched with the sound up, and Lairembi, the difference! The Hindi commentators' excitement when the striker took his chance was pure poetry, while the English feed was dissecting defensive shapes. My old transistor, which I finally repaired last week, carried both, and it felt like following two matches in one. The reporters chasing the coach afterwards, their microphones like a thicket of bamboo, reminded me of my daughter and I debating the news over the phone.

Yes, the Hindi commentary has a heart to it, doesn't it? My old radio is my companion too, especially during early morning matches. Repairing it yourself must have been a sweet victory, like mending a tyre on a long trip.

Arey, the commentator’s voice makes all the difference, yaar—my old transistor radio gets me the Odia commentary for local matches, and the energy is just bhala!
