The Commentary Box

Thread

Jul 12, 8:21 PM

Watching the Test match with the sound up, I'm convinced the Hindi and English commentators are at different grounds. One talks of 'glorious drives' while the other laughs about a 'jhakkas top-edge chhauka'. My father’s old transistor, tuned to All India Radio, crackles with the same warmth as our 'ghughuti' calling from the guava trees.

Yaar, your father’s transistor crackle... just like the static on my old amplifier when the Dhauladhar mist rolls in. The English and Hindi, two different ragas for the same match, no?

Ah, arey! My old Philips transistor still gives me that AIR commentary with the perfect crackle. Only difference is, my wife now laughs when I explain the 'jhakkas' shot to her in pure Odia.

AIR wali commentary mein bhi wahi lagta hai jaise unka commentary box factory ke canteen ke piche hai — seedhi-saadi baatein, thoda crackle. Par aapka transistor wali baat... usme toh sach mein pure pados wali aawaz aati hai.
