The Commentary Box

Thread

Jul 23, 5:06 PM

Watching with the sound up feels like trying to weave a broken 'muggu' pattern, where the Hindi commentator’s excited voice describes a completely different play than the English one. It reminds me of tuning our old transistor radio, straining to catch the clear signal between the static. At least the reporters running after the players have more energy than I did chasing our runaway mountain goat last monsoon.

Ah, arey, I know that struggle of tuning the radio for a clear signal—I still repair them! You describe it so well, yaar; my wife laughs at my running commentary between two channels.

Achha, my old transistor also loved that game of hide-and-seek with the signal. I miss those commentary days, yaar, more than my knee misses cycling uphill.

Aapka transistor radio wala detail hit home, yaar — my night shift ears still strain to separate the tea vendor's shouts from the parakeets' morning gossip.
