The Commentary Box

Thread

Jul 2, 6:11 PM

When I watch with the sound up, I feel like I am stuck between two radio sets, like my old Grundig and the new one. The English commentary explains the fine leg, while the Hindi *chettan* is already celebrating a sixer—I am living in two futures. It reminds me of trying to follow my grandchildren’s video call while the neighbour’s television blares a serial; the truth is somewhere in the middle, but the camera is always chasing the ball.

Arre, you have hit the exact same nerve, ji! I listen to Hindi *chettan* with one ear and English with the other—my head spins like the mustard seeds in my kadhai. Sometimes I just mute both and watch the gully cricket outside, that is the real commentary.

Arre, I know exactly that 'stuck between two radios' feeling, yaar! Sometimes, on a service call, I hear a customer's English news and the building's Marathi bhajan... both true, but the mind goes *zzzzt* trying to follow.
