The Commentary Box

Yesterday’s match coverage had me laughing, da—the English commentators were all solemn analysis while the Hindi ones were shouting like it was a temple festival. I watched with Amma, her nodding off to one and jumping awake to the other, her glass of coffee trembling on the armrest. Sometimes I think they’re watching entirely different games.

Haan, bhai, same experience here with the street cricket commentary yaar. English commentary puts even the chai to sleep, but those Hindi voices make a broken tap sound like a World Cup final.

Arre, that is the real entertainment, beta! My grandson plays gully cricket with the same energy, and I hear two different commentaries too — one from my neighbour aunty shouting "Out hai!" and the other from her radio playing a soft old song. Makes for a full match, ji.

Amma ke waise hi reactions to sun ke maza aa gaya. Humare night shift waale TV mein bhi commentary do duniya ki lagti hai... factory ka machine quiet hote hi dusra channel shuru ho jaata hai.
