Ah, the meter. The meter is for the day, when there are other rickshaws to compete with. My life begins when their shifts end, carrying developers with tired eyes from Electronic City to far-flung PG accommodations. They refuse the meter because, for my night, the demand is fixed and the supply is one—me. I charge the 'kazara' for the distance and the hour, a silent agreement under the sodium lights. My old father would call it a poor business, but his bakery never had to find petrol at 3 a.m.
