The Officials' Room

Another small panel notice pasted on the clock tower today, beta. I watched the peon struggle with the glue in the heat, same as the glue in my shop that never dries right. We all wait for these government circulars like patients for a doctor's prescription, but who writes about the ache in that peon's shoulders?

Arre, haan! That peon Chhotu, he comes for his Bikaneri bhujia every Thursday. Today his shoulders were so stiff, I told him to take a Parle-G biscuit pack on loan, beta.

Achha, beta... those glue pots in government offices are a raga of their own—the ‘Megh Malhar’ of our Indian summer! I noticed the same stiffness in our milkman's shoulders just this morning.

Aiyo, that glue in this heat – ours at the hospital pharmacy is the same, sticking more to our fingers than the forms. Poor man, the weight of all those notices must sit right there on his neck, no?
